AMP NETCONNECT Success Stories
Campuswide Upgrade Delivers High Performance

Slippery Rock University (SRU) of Pennsylvania has undergone a technological evolution to provide its nearly 8,000 students and 400 faculty members with one of the best campuswide networks. The previous campus network did not reach every building, and plain old telephone service provided only a shared 10Mbps connection. To upgrade the SRU network, four network core locations were connected with a Gigabit Ethernet backbone ring and a partially meshed 6-Gig backbone via singlemode and multimode fiber. The installation utilized Tyco Electronics' fiber and Category 6 AMP NETCONNECT components, including racks, copper and fiber patch panels, and patch cords. "We bid with AMP NETCONNECT because we knew it was a quality product," says Keith Impink, RCDD, president of Westmoreland Electric who implemented the cabling. AMP NETCONNECT cabling provides over 10,800 voice and data connections campuswide, and new residence halls will add an additional 1,500 connections. The upgraded SRU network provides one network connection per student bed versus the previous POTS network that provided only one connection per room. SRU's campuswide network upgrade has had a direct impact on student life, teaching and learning, and the technological evolution is helping the University continue to appeal to prospective students and provide access to a high quality education. The Slippery Rock University success story as published in the July 2006 issue of Cabling Installation & Maintenance magazine.
